Outdoor Climbing Skills – Learn to Climb

If you’ve always fancied having a go at climbing but don’t know where to start or maybe you’ve climbed indoors and want to progress to climbing on real rock outdoors then our Outdoor Climbing Skills – Learn to Climb course is exactly what you need.

On this course you will develop the knowledge and skills you need to climb safely outdoors.

This course is for you if:

  • You're new to climbing.
  • You've never climbed before and want to give it a try.
  • You've tried climbing before and now want to learn the skils to climb on your own or with a partner.
  • You've climbed indoors and are looking to transition to outdoor climbing on real rock.

During the course we will aim to cover the following:

  • Choosing an outdoor climbing venue and selecting suitable routes – Using guidebooks and understanding climbing grades.
  • Identifying hazards and staying safe
  • How to warm up prior to climbing to prevent injury and improve performance.
  • Climbing movement skills – from how best to use your feet, body position and balance through to learning how best to use different types of hand holds and much more.
  • Choosing and using appropriate equipment and PPE – from when to wear a climbing helmet through to placing and removing protection.
  • How to tie-in, belay and manage the rope to keep you and your partner safe.

As well as learning all the key skills the course will be packed full of climbing so that you can get well on your way to becoming a competent outdoor climber.

All our courses are tailor made to your needs, so it doesn’t matter if you are completely new to climbing or already have some knowledge, you’ll definitely learn plenty and grow in confidence and ability.

The main areas we work in are the Peak District, North Yorkshire and the Dales and the Lake District but we are happy to travel further afield to work with you to help you achieve your aims.

Venues will be selected in discussion with you so that you can get the most out of your time with us.

Choose from a single day up to a full week depending on how much time you have available.

£175 per day – maximum of 2 people.

The weather can vary wildly in the UK.  So, it is important that we set out wearing the right clothing and that we take the right equipment.

Listed below are all the items of clothing and equipment that we recommend you wear/bring with you on our climbing courses.

Essential Clothing (to be worn/carried)

  • Footwear. Please make sure you have suitable footwear for walking into any climbing venues.  For venues close to the road, a pair of trainers, trekking or approach shoes will normally suffice.  If the venue is further afield or a mountain crag then a lightweight pair of walking boots or a good approach shoe will be better – please ask in advance if you are not sure.
  • Legwear. Please make sure your legwear is comfortable and doesn’t restrict your movement – the ability to have free unrestricted leg movement is essential for climbing.  Please note, jeans or heavy tracksuit bottoms are not suitable.
  • Upper body.  Climbing venues can often be exposed and windy so please make sure you bring sufficient layers to keep warm.  As with legwear, clothing worn on your upper body should not restrict your movement.  We suggest a long-sleeved base layer with a t-shirt and fleece layer as a minimum.
  • Jacket.  A good warm jacket for belaying in.  This can be a fleece jacket or lightweight duvet/insulated jacket.
  • Waterproof Jacket.  Excellent for keeping the wind out and of course for keeping you dry in showers.
  • Waterproof trousers.  Recommended but not essential.
  • Woolly hat.
  • Gloves or mittens.

You may also want to consider a buff, these are great for keeping the neck warm or using as a balaclava to stave off wind and rain.

Essential Equipment

  • Small Rucksack. To carry all your things to the crag in, 30l is adequate.
  • Climbing Harness.  These are available to hire for a small fee – please enquire.
  • Climbing Helmet.  Available to hire for a small fee – please enquire.
  • Climbing Shoes
  • Personal First Aid Kit.  Our instructor will carry a group first aid kit, but we recommend you carry a personal first aid kit which includes suncream, plasters and plaster tape, painkillers etc.

Optional Equipment

  • Camera.
  • Mobile Phone.
  • Sunglasses.

Food & Drink

  • Food.  Please make sure you bring a packed lunch and/or some snacks to keep you going throughout the day.  Food is not included.
  • Drink.  Please bring something to drink throughout the day – at least 1lt of water as a minimum.  Dehydration is a serious problem and it is easy to become dehydrated whilst climbing even when there is no sunshine.
