In early July I was fortunate enough to meet Jools, a driving force behind SueMe® underwear at the Outdoor Trade Show. We had a fun conversation which ended in him donating a pair of SueMe® Mens Tree Trunks for me to try out. So, try them out I did and after putting them through their paces, here’s what I have to say about them…
SueMe® Mens Tree Trunk underwear claim to be natural, comfortable performance underwear. They are marketed as being anti-bacterial, super soft, 95% Beech Tree, suitable for all sports and odourless. To test these claims I have worn them on three National Three Peaks Challenges, whilst multi-pitch rock climbing in the Lake District and on several runs.
Made from 95% Lenzing Modal®, SueMe® Mens Tree Trunk underwear is just about as natural as you can get these days. Lenzing Modal® is produced from Beech trees. The wood is pulped and the liquid is then forced through tiny holes to create fibres which are then woven together to make the fabric. It is said to be a carbon neutral process. That said, the other 5% is Elastane, a totally man-made fibre similar to Lycra which gives the fabric its stretch properties.
Taking the trunks out of the box the first thing I noticed was how smooth and soft they felt and this feel translated itself to close fitting and comfortable once I’d put them on. Working in the outdoors is often physically demanding and the last thing you want is for your underwear to become uncomfortable or chafe. I wore my SueMe® Tree Trunks whilst guiding the National Three Peaks Challenge which involves climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in one continuous push. The trunks remained super comfortable throughout, wicking away any sweat and keeping their close fitting shape. Whilst climbing, I was totally unaware of the trunks, they moved with me as I climbed and didn’t restrict me in any way. The same can be said for wearing them whilst running, there are no uncomfortable seams that might chafe and the trunks simply do the job they were designed for.
SueMe® claim that their underwear is anti-bacterial but I couldn’t find any information on how this is achieved so can’t comment further on that aspect. On the odour front, I’m not accustomed to sniffing my underwear after use but didn’t detect any untoward smells when removing my SueMe® Tree Trunks after extended use. That’s got to be a good thing!
To summarise, my SueMe® Tree Trunks performed extremely well, they were super comfortable, very functional and they maintained this level of comfort and performance even after repeated wash and wear cycles. If I were to give them a star rating it would definitely be five out of five. I’ll certainly be buying some more and would thoroughly recommend them.
