By Jack Oliver – Lake District Adventuring
With endless mountain tops, beautiful parks and thick woodland full of wildlife, flora and fauna the Lake District is interspersed with such a diverse number of attractions. You’re spoiled for choice of things to do in the Lake District. The Lakes has become popular with adrenaline seekers, active ramblers and people looking to try a new experience. So, to make it easier for you I’ve put together four of the best Lake District activities for you try in this amazing area.
- Gorge / Ghyll scrambling in the Lake District
For those seeking an adventure of the wetter kind ghyll scrambling involves scrambling, sliding and abseiling your way up or down one of the many ghylls. The word ghyll just means mountain stream. There a plenty of options from high level all in, to just beginners’, perfect for younger children. This perfect Lake District activity comes highly recommended if you’re visiting the area.
- Beginners Rock climbing
The Lake District is the home of English rock climbing. Rock climbing started right here and because of that, with a wide range of great places to go climbing it is the perfect place to come and learn. You don’t have to be a pro or have even climbed before as your instructor will keep you safe and teach you everything you need to know. If you’ve done it before and fancy stepping up your game, why not hire a guide for the day and have something a little more tailored to your needs. You’ll be able to learn more about climbing as well as visiting some of the amazing crags the Lake District has to offer.
- Abseiling experience
From a mountaineering point of view abseiling is used to access a place that cannot be reached on foot, for example a sea cliff. It involves descending backwards down a steep cliff or rock face. This really is a great way to push yourself and have an epic adventure. It’s great fun for kids or larger groups and works really well with any of the other outdoor activities that we suggested to make a full day of adventure.
- Sun set mountain walking
The Lake District is such a beautiful place regardless of the time of day or year. However, there’s something more magical as the sun is setting over the mountains and the whole place lights up and it is just beautiful. A sunset walk could be a great way to wrap up or start your Lake District stay cation. Your walk up in day light and then see the sunset before heading down off the mountain in darkness which is quite an amazing experience in its own right. Your mountain guide will help to keep you safe along the way and help with anything you might need.
