This trip takes you into the heart of the Lake District National Park where we camp high in the mountains to experience the freedom of the great outdoors.
The trip is aimed at anyone wanting to experience wild camping for the first time, anyone who wants to learn or improve their knowledge of the skills required for wild camping and mountain expeditions and those working towards the Mountain Leader Award. Your trip can be totally guided with our experienced mountain leader looking after you or we can structure a programme that allows you to learn and develop skills such as route selection/planning, mountain navigation, selecting wild campsites and reducing the environmental impact.

Monkey Mountaineering's Approach
Maximise Chances of Success. At Monkey Mountaineering we recognise the difficulties involved in organising and carrying out a successful wild camping trip, that's why we do everything we can to help you achieve your goal. We can assist you with equipment by supplying tents, sleeping matts and cooking equipment. We use fully qualified and experienced Mountain Leaders as a minimum. All our leaders have extensive knowledge of the UK Mountains and all have in-date outdoor first aid qualifications. They are client focused and will manage the whole trip to ensure you have a truly memorable experience. We are good but we can't work miracles so we recommend that you do some training walks to improve your fitness in prior to coming wild camping with us (If you would like support with day walks in the UK Mountains please get in touch to find out how we can help).
Minimise Environmental Impact. In keeping with our core values of sustainable adventure travel we take steps to ensure our impact on the environment is kept to a minimum. We always respect the environment we operate in and we plan all our wild camping trips with this in mind. Our wild camping group sizes are never more than 6. We will always establish campsites in discrete locations and our leaders encourage responsible behaviour whilst on the mountain operating a policy of:
'take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints'.

The itinerary outlined below is for guidance only, each trip is slightly different and tailored to take into account your requirements and the expected weather conditions (we reserve the right to cancel this trip at short notice if the weather forecast is looking particularly bad – we don't do this very often though!)
- 0900 – Meet at a convenient location. Discuss and confirm requirements. Check clothing and equipment (see guidance on clothing & equipment and also what's included/not included). Distribute team equipment. Set off walking.
- 1800 – Set up camp. Cook and eat evening meal. Optional night walk.
- 2100 – Retire for the evening.
- 0700 – Breakfast and pack up camp.
- 1400 – Return to start point (or pick up point and return to start). Sort and return any Monkey Mountaineering supplied equipment.
- 1500 – Trip complete, say goodbye.

The weather can vary enormously in the UK mountains. As we run this trip year round it is fair to say that we get all the weather can throw at us and so we need to be prepared!
With this in mind it is important that we set out wearing the right clothing and carrying the right equipment. Listed below are all the items of clothing that you will need on one of our wild camping trips. We have annotated some items as essential and your guide will check you have these before you set of into the mountains.

Essential Clothing (to be worn/carried)
- Walking boots. A good pair of walking boots which provide ankle support and are well broken-in. Boots are essential - Please do not bring trail shoes or trainers.
- Hiking socks. We recommend a good pair of proper hiking/trekking socks for each day.
- Lightweight walking trousers. Jeans or tracksuit bottoms are not suitable.
- 2 x Long-sleeved thermal top.
- Thermal Long Johns.
- Tee-shirt. Should be a technical fabric – avoid cotton as it is slow to dry.
- Warm Layer. This can be a fleece jumper, fleece jacket or lightweight duvet/insulated jacket.
- Waterproof Jacket. Should be breathable and with a hood.
- Waterproof trousers. Ideally these will also be breathable.
- Wooly hat.
- Gloves or mittens.
You may also want to consider a buff, these are great for keeping the neck warm or using as a balaclava to stave off wind and rain.
- Rucksack. 50+ litres.
- Mountain Tent/Sleeping Matt/Cooking Equipment/Gas. We can supply these, please request at time of booking.
- Sleeping Bag. Three seasons as a minimum.
- Head torch. Please ensure you have new batteries in and bring some spares.
- Personal First Aid Kit. Our guide will carry a group first aid kit but we recommend you carry a personal first aid kit which includes suncream, blister plasters (compeed), plasters, painkillers etc.
- Water container. It is essential that you have the means to carry at least 2 litres of drinking water. The best solution is a bladder type water carrier such as a camelbak as this then allows you to drink whilst walking with no need to stop to get out a water bottle.
- Unbreakable Mug. Preferably one with a lid.
- Spork. Or knife/fork & spoon.
- Waterproof Bags. Various sizes to pack and separate your kit – ideally you should also have a large waterproof liner in your rucksack.
- Tooth Brush & Tooth Paste. You can also bring a small wash kit or wet wipes.
- Plastic Bags. For removing waste/rubbish.
- Walking poles
- Mobile Phone.
Snacks & Lunches
We do not supply snacks & lunches on this trip, please make sure you bring your own. Everyone has their preferences when it comes to snacks so we won't dictate what you should bring however some foods/snacks work better than others. Sandwiches don't tend to work too well on the hill; they get squashed and/or soggy. Bananas (avoid getting these squashed too), little oranges, mini pork pies, dried fruit, chocolate bars, wine gums & jelly babies and other similar snack foods all work well on the hill. Whatever works for you really so long as you have enough!
