    Top Rope Rigging Course

Top-rope climbing is one of the safest and most accessible ways to introduce people to climbing outdoors. Whether you’re looking to take family members climbing, help friends experience their first day on real rock or simply create a safe environment to practise climbing movement, the ability to rig reliable top-rope systems is a valuable skill.

However, setting up a top rope outdoors requires far more than simply attaching a rope to an anchor. Anchor selection, equipment choice, rigging principles and risk management all play an important role in creating safe and effective climbing systems. Understanding how these elements work together is essential if you want to rig climbs confidently and responsibly.

Our Top Rope Rigging Course is designed to help climbers develop the knowledge, judgement and practical skills needed to build and manage top-rope systems at single-pitch crags. Whether you’re completely new to rigging or looking to improve existing skills, we’ll tailor the course to your experience, confidence and objectives.

Through a combination of practical instruction, discussion and hands-on rigging, you’ll learn how to assess venues, select suitable anchors and build robust climbing systems. The emphasis is not simply on following a set of instructions, but on understanding the principles behind safe rigging so that you can make informed decisions in a wide variety of situations.

    Is This Course For You?

This course is designed for climbers who want to learn how to safely rig and manage top-rope climbing systems at outdoor crags.

No previous rigging experience is required. Many participants already climb indoors or outdoors and want to understand how anchors and top-rope systems work, while others are looking to gain the skills needed to introduce family members and friends to climbing in a safe and controlled environment.

A basic familiarity with climbing equipment, knots and belaying is beneficial, but not essential. More important is a willingness to learn and an interest in understanding the principles that underpin safe climbing systems.

Because every course is bespoke, we can tailor the content to your existing experience and objectives. Whether you’re completely new to top-rope rigging, looking to improve existing skills or wanting to develop greater confidence in your decision-making, we’ll build a course around your individual needs.

If you’re unsure whether this course is right for you, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to discuss your goals and recommend the most appropriate option.

If your interests lie in leading routes rather than managing top-rope systems, our Lead Climbing and Multi-Pitch Climbing courses may be more appropriate.

    The Course

Building a top-rope system is about far more than simply attaching a rope to an anchor. Every crag is different and the ability to assess the environment, identify suitable anchors and create robust climbing systems requires both technical knowledge and sound judgement.

Every Top Rope Rigging Course is tailored to your experience, confidence and objectives. Some participants join us to learn how to rig top ropes for the first time, while others are looking to refine existing skills, improve efficiency or gain a deeper understanding of anchor systems. Whether you book a single day or return for further coaching as your experience develops, we’ll build the course around your individual needs.

Topics may include venue selection, hazard identification, anchor selection, anchor construction, equalisation, equipment choices, rope management and the principles that underpin safe rigging. We can explore both top-belayed and bottom-belayed systems, helping you understand the advantages, limitations and appropriate use of each approach.

This is a practical, hands-on course and you can expect to spend plenty of time building systems, discussing decision-making and putting your learning into practice. Where appropriate, we’ll also spend time climbing so you can see how the systems perform in real use.

Rather than teaching a single way of doing things, we focus on understanding the principles behind safe rigging. The aim is not simply to memorise a set of techniques, but to develop the knowledge and judgement needed to assess a situation and build appropriate climbing systems with confidence.

Courses can be anything from a single day through to a longer programme depending on your goals, experience and available time. Whatever your starting point, our aim is to help you become more knowledgeable, more confident and more capable when rigging climbing systems outdoors.

    Best Time To Climb

op-rope rigging can be learned throughout much of the year, provided conditions are suitable.

For most climbers, the best period runs from April through to October when longer days, warmer temperatures and drier rock provide the most comfortable learning environment. Spring and autumn are often particularly enjoyable, offering quieter crags and excellent climbing conditions.

Summer provides the greatest flexibility, with long daylight hours allowing plenty of time to explore different venues, build systems and put your learning into practice. On particularly hot days, shaded crags or higher venues can offer more comfortable conditions.

Outside the main season, many crags remain suitable for training during dry winter weather. However, shorter daylight hours, wet rock and winter conditions can sometimes limit venue choice and learning opportunities.

We select venues based on your experience, objectives and the prevailing conditions. By remaining flexible and choosing the most appropriate crag for the day, we can maximise both learning opportunities and time spent climbing.

Why Learn To Rig With Monkey Mountaineering

Monkey Mountaineering is a small, independent company that puts quality of experience ahead of volume. Our Top Rope Rigging courses are designed around the individual, allowing us to tailor the content, pace and objectives to your experience, confidence and ambitions.

Building safe climbing systems is about far more than learning a collection of knots and techniques. Every venue is different and no two rigging situations are exactly the same. That’s why our courses focus on understanding the principles behind safe rigging, helping you develop the judgement needed to assess a situation and select an appropriate solution.

Unlike many providers, we don’t believe competence comes from memorising a single way of doing things. Real confidence develops through understanding, practical experience and thoughtful coaching. Throughout the course, we’ll explore the reasoning behind anchor selection, equipment choices and system design, helping you build knowledge that can be applied across a wide range of climbing venues.

Our instructors are experienced climbers and qualified professionals who are passionate about helping people become safer, more capable and more independent. You’ll receive personalised coaching, honest feedback and plenty of opportunities to build, test and discuss systems in real-world environments.

Every Top Rope Rigging Course we run is bespoke. Rather than following a fixed itinerary, we build each course around your experience, confidence and objectives.

Some participants join us to learn the fundamentals of anchor selection and top-rope rigging for the first time, while others are looking to improve existing systems, gain a better understanding of rigging principles or develop greater confidence when setting up climbs for friends and family. The content and pace of the course will depend on your previous experience, goals and the amount of time you have available.

We regularly deliver courses in the Peak District, North Yorkshire, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, although we are happy to travel further afield where appropriate. Venues are selected in discussion with you and chosen to provide the best possible learning environment based on your objectives and the prevailing conditions.

Throughout the course you’ll spend plenty of time assessing venues, building systems, discussing decision-making and putting your learning into practice. Where appropriate, there will also be opportunities to climb and see how different rigging solutions perform in real-world use.

Whether you’re learning to rig top ropes for the first time or refining existing skills, we’ll create a course that helps you develop the knowledge, judgement and confidence needed to build and manage climbing systems safely and effectively.

We run our Top Rope Rigging courses throughout the year, with dates arranged around your availability, objectives and the prevailing conditions.

Courses are priced at £300 per day for up to two people and can be booked for anything from a single day through to a longer programme spread over several visits.

Every course is bespoke. We’ll tailor the content, pace and venue to your experience, confidence and ambitions, ensuring you get the maximum benefit from your time at the crag.

Courses are regularly delivered in the Peak District, North Yorkshire, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, although other locations may be possible by arrangement.

If you’re unsure how best to structure your learning or how many days you may need, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to discuss the options with you.
