    Top Rope Rigging Course

Top-rope climbing is one of the safest and most accessible ways to introduce people to climbing outdoors. Whether you’re looking to take family members climbing, help friends experience their first day on real rock or simply create a safe environment to practise climbing movement, the ability to rig reliable top-rope systems is a valuable skill.

However, setting up a top rope outdoors requires far more than simply attaching a rope to an anchor. Anchor selection, equipment choice, rigging principles and risk management all play an important role in creating safe and effective climbing systems. Understanding how these elements work together is essential if you want to rig climbs confidently and responsibly.

Our Top Rope Rigging Course is designed to help climbers develop the knowledge, judgement and practical skills needed to build and manage top-rope systems at single-pitch crags. Whether you’re completely new to rigging or looking to improve existing skills, we’ll tailor the course to your experience, confidence and objectives.

Through a combination of practical instruction, discussion and hands-on rigging, you’ll learn how to assess venues, select suitable anchors and build robust climbing systems. The emphasis is not simply on following a set of instructions, but on understanding the principles behind safe rigging so that you can make informed decisions in a wide variety of situations.

    Is This Course For You?

This course is designed for climbers who want to learn how to safely rig and manage top-rope climbing systems at outdoor crags.

No previous rigging experience is required. Many participants already climb indoors or outdoors and want to understand how anchors and top-rope systems work, while others are looking to develop the skills and confidence needed to introduce family members or friends to climbing in a safe and controlled environment.

Whether you’re completely new to outdoor rigging, looking to refine existing skills or simply want greater confidence in your decision-making, we’ll tailor the course to your experience and objectives.

A basic familiarity with climbing equipment, knots and belaying is helpful but not essential. More important is a willingness to learn and an interest in understanding the principles that underpin safe climbing systems.

If you’re unsure whether this is the right course for you, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to discuss your goals. If your ambitions lie in leading routes rather than managing top-rope systems, our Lead Climbing or Multi-Pitch Climbing courses may be more appropriate.

    The Course

Building a top-rope system is about far more than simply attaching a rope to an anchor. Every crag is different and the ability to assess the environment, identify suitable anchors and build robust climbing systems requires both technical knowledge and sound judgement.

Because every course is bespoke, we’ll tailor the content to your existing experience, confidence and objectives. Whether you’re rigging a top rope for the first time or looking to refine existing techniques, we’ll build the course around your individual needs.

Throughout the day you’ll learn not only how to build safe climbing systems, but why they’re built that way. Rather than teaching a single method to memorise, we focus on the principles that underpin safe decision-making, enabling you to assess each venue and build appropriate systems with confidence.

    Topics may include:

    • Venue selection and hazard identification.
    • Assessing and selecting suitable anchors.
    • Anchor construction and equalisation.
    • Equipment selection and rope management.
    • Top-belayed and bottom-belayed systems.
    • Managing common problems and avoiding typical rigging mistakes.
    • Developing efficient, safe working practices at the crag.

This is a practical, hands-on course and you’ll spend plenty of time building systems, discussing real-world scenarios and putting your learning into practice. Where appropriate, we’ll also spend time climbing so you can see how different systems perform in use.

Courses can be anything from a single day to a longer programme depending on your experience, objectives and available time. Whatever your starting point, our aim is to help you become more knowledgeable, more confident and more capable when rigging top-rope climbing systems outdoors.

    Best Time To Climb

Top-rope rigging can be learned throughout much of the year, provided conditions are suitable.

For most climbers, the best period runs from April through to October when longer days, warmer temperatures and drier rock provide the most comfortable learning environment. Spring and autumn are often particularly enjoyable, offering quieter crags and excellent climbing conditions.

Summer provides the greatest flexibility, with long daylight hours allowing plenty of time to explore different venues, build systems and put your learning into practice. On particularly hot days, shaded crags or higher venues can offer more comfortable conditions.

Outside the main season, many crags remain suitable for training during dry winter weather. However, shorter daylight hours, wet rock and winter conditions can sometimes limit venue choice and learning opportunities.

We select venues based on your experience, objectives and the prevailing conditions. By remaining flexible and choosing the most appropriate crag for the day, we can maximise both learning opportunities and time spent climbing.

    Why Book With Monkey Mountaineering

Learning to rig top ropes safely isn’t about memorising a sequence of steps. It’s about developing the judgement to assess a crag, understand the hazards, select appropriate anchors and build climbing systems that are suitable for the situation in front of you.

At Monkey Mountaineering, we believe that understanding why something works is just as important as knowing how to do it. Rather than teaching a single way of rigging, we explain the principles behind safe anchor systems, giving you the confidence to adapt your approach as venues, rock types and climbing objectives change.

All of our courses are delivered by experienced mountaineering professionals with extensive knowledge of climbing systems and outdoor instruction. We work with small numbers to provide plenty of individual coaching, allowing you to ask questions, practise repeatedly and progress at a pace that suits you.

Because every course is bespoke, we can focus on the areas that matter most to you. Whether you’re taking your first steps into outdoor climbing or refining skills you’ve developed over many years, we’ll tailor the day to help you achieve your goals.

Our aim isn’t simply to teach you how to rig a top rope for today. It’s to help you develop the knowledge, judgement and confidence to make safe, well-informed decisions every time you climb.

Because every Top Rope Rigging Course is tailored to your experience and objectives, we don’t follow a fixed itinerary. Instead, we’ll discuss your existing knowledge, climbing background and goals before the course so that we can plan a day that delivers the greatest benefit.

We’ll select an appropriate venue based on your experience, the weather and the skills you want to develop. We regularly deliver courses in the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire and the Lake District, but we’re also happy to travel further afield by arrangement.

The day normally begins with an introduction to the venue, identifying hazards and discussing the anchors and climbing systems available. From there, you’ll spend the majority of the day building and refining top-rope systems under the guidance of your instructor, developing both your technical skills and your understanding of the principles that underpin safe rigging.

As your confidence grows, we’ll introduce different anchor configurations, equipment choices and rigging challenges, helping you understand how your approach should adapt to different crags, rock types and climbing situations. Throughout the course there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, practise repeatedly and discuss the reasoning behind each decision.

Where appropriate, we’ll also spend time climbing on the systems you’ve built, allowing you to see how they perform in practice and further develop your understanding of safe and efficient top-rope rigging.

By the end of the course, you’ll have built a variety of top-rope systems and, more importantly, developed the knowledge and judgement needed to assess different venues, select appropriate anchors and rig climbing systems with confidence.

Every Top Rope Rigging Course is tailored to your experience, objectives and pace of learning. Whether you’re completely new to outdoor rigging or looking to build on existing skills, we’ll create a course that helps you achieve your goals and develop confidence in building safe climbing systems.

Courses can be booked from a single day through to a longer programme, depending on the depth of learning you’re looking for and the time you have available. Many climbers find that a single day provides an excellent introduction, while others choose additional days to explore more advanced rigging techniques and scenarios.

    £300 per day (1–2 participants).

Courses are available throughout the year on dates to suit you. We’ll agree a suitable venue and itinerary in advance, taking into account your objectives, experience, the type of climbing you enjoy and the prevailing weather conditions.

To discuss your requirements or arrange a course, please get in touch, we’ll be happy to help you plan a day that’s right for you.
