You don’t need to be an athlete, but you do need good walking fitness. You should be able to walk 5–10 miles (8–16km) for 5–7 hours per day on consecutive days, carrying a light daypack. Speed isn’t important, a slow steady pace is best for acclimatisation and, but consistency and endurance are key. Most people of average fitness can complete the trek with proper preparation.
