    Lead Climbing

Learning to lead is one of the biggest steps in a climber’s progression. For the first time, you’re responsible for protecting your own ascent, making decisions about when and where to place protection, and managing the rope system as you climb. It can feel intimidating at first, but it is also one of the most rewarding skills a climber can develop.

Lead climbing opens the door to a far wider range of climbing opportunities. Whether your ambitions lie in sport climbing, traditional climbing or multi-pitch adventures, learning to lead gives you greater freedom, independence and control over your climbing.

Our Lead Climbing courses are designed to help you make this transition safely and confidently. Whether you’re an indoor climber looking to take the next step, an outdoor climber wanting to move beyond seconding routes, or someone returning to climbing after a break, we’ll tailor the course to your experience, confidence and goals.

Through a combination of practical climbing, coaching and discussion, you’ll develop the technical skills, judgement and confidence needed to begin leading routes safely. The emphasis is not simply on learning a set of techniques, but on understanding why things are done a certain way and building the decision-making skills that underpin safe and enjoyable climbing.

    Is This Course For You?

This course is designed for climbers who are already comfortable climbing as a second and are ready to take the next step towards leading routes for themselves.

You should have a reasonable level of climbing experience and be confident belaying, tying in and moving on rock. Previous experience of outdoor climbing is beneficial, but not essential, depending on your goals. The course is suitable for both indoor climbers looking to progress onto outdoor lead climbing and outdoor climbers who want to move beyond seconding routes.

No previous lead climbing experience is required. Many participants are learning to place protection, build belays and manage the responsibilities of leading for the first time.

Lead climbing is about far more than simply clipping a rope or placing gear. It requires judgement, decision-making and an understanding of risk. Throughout the course we’ll help you develop the technical skills and confidence needed to begin leading safely, while recognising that becoming a competent lead climber is a journey that develops through experience over time.

If you’re already leading routes but would like to improve your confidence, refine your systems or address gaps in your knowledge, the course can also be tailored to your individual requirements.

Once you’re comfortable leading single-pitch routes, our Multi-Pitch Climbing course can help you develop the skills needed for longer and more committing climbs. Many climbers also choose to develop their understanding of anchors, rope systems and rigging principles through our Top Rope Rigging Course.

    The Course

Learning to lead is about far more than placing protection and clipping the rope. It is about developing the confidence, judgement and decision-making skills needed to take responsibility for your own climbing.

Every Lead Climbing course is tailored to your experience, confidence and aspirations. Some climbers join us to lead their very first route, while others are looking to consolidate existing skills, build confidence or address specific areas of uncertainty. Whether you book a single day or return for further coaching as your climbing develops, we’ll build the course around your individual needs.

Topics may include choosing suitable climbing venues and routes, understanding grades, identifying hazards, placing and removing protection, rope management, building belays, bringing up a second and safely finishing a climb. We also explore the human side of lead climbing, including confidence, fear management and decision-making under pressure.

This is a practical, hands-on course and you can expect to spend plenty of time climbing. Rather than teaching skills in isolation, we focus on applying them in real climbing situations, helping you understand not only how things are done but why they are done that way.

As the course progresses, the emphasis shifts from simply learning techniques to developing the judgement needed to make safe decisions for yourself and your climbing partner. The aim is not to create dependence on an instructor, but to give you the confidence, knowledge and understanding needed to continue your development as an independent lead climber.

Lead climbing is a skill that develops through experience and practice. For some climbers, a single day provides the perfect introduction; others choose to continue their development over several days or return for additional coaching as their ambitions grow.

    Best Time To Climb

Lead climbing can be enjoyed throughout much of the year, provided conditions are suitable.

For most climbers, the best period runs from April through to October when longer days, warmer temperatures and drier rock provide the most reliable conditions. Spring and autumn are often particularly enjoyable, combining comfortable temperatures with quieter crags and excellent friction on the rock.

Summer offers the longest days and the greatest flexibility for longer outings, although some venues can become busy during peak holiday periods. On very hot days, shaded crags or higher-altitude venues often provide more comfortable climbing conditions.

Outside the main season, many crags remain climbable throughout the winter when conditions are dry. Cold temperatures can provide excellent friction, but shorter daylight hours, wet rock and winter weather can limit venue choice and opportunities for progression.

We select venues based on your experience, objectives and the prevailing conditions. By remaining flexible and choosing the most appropriate crag for the day, we can maximise both learning opportunities and climbing time.

    Why Book With Monkey Mountaineering

Monkey Mountaineering is a small, independent company that puts quality of experience ahead of volume. Our Lead Climbing courses are designed around the individual, not a fixed syllabus, allowing us to tailor the content, pace and objectives to your experience, confidence and ambitions.

Learning to lead is one of the biggest steps a climber can take. While the technical skills are important, successful lead climbers also develop judgement, confidence and the ability to make good decisions under pressure. That’s why our courses focus on understanding rather than simply following a set of instructions. We want you to understand not only how things are done, but why.

Unlike many providers, we don’t believe that competence can be achieved by simply working through a checklist of skills. Real confidence develops through experience, practice and thoughtful coaching. Whether you’re leading your first route, consolidating existing skills or returning for additional coaching as your climbing develops, we’ll work with you to help you progress at a pace that suits you.

Our instructors are experienced climbers and qualified professionals who are passionate about helping people become safer, more capable and more independent. Throughout the course you’ll receive honest feedback, personalised coaching and plenty of opportunities to put your learning into practice on real rock.

The aim is simple: to help you develop the skills, judgement and confidence needed to continue your progression as a safe and independent lead climber.

Every Lead Climbing course we run is bespoke. Rather than following a fixed itinerary, we build each course around your experience, confidence and objectives.

Some climbers join us to learn the fundamentals of lead climbing and place protection for the first time, while others are looking to consolidate existing skills, improve confidence or prepare for more challenging objectives. The content and pace of the course will depend on your previous experience, the type of climbing you are interested in and the amount of time you have available.

We typically operate in the Peak District, North Yorkshire, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, although we are happy to travel further afield where appropriate. Venues are selected in discussion with you and chosen to provide the best possible learning environment based on your goals and the prevailing conditions.

Throughout the course you’ll spend plenty of time climbing, practising skills and discussing decision-making in real situations. The emphasis is always on helping you build the confidence, judgement and technical understanding needed to progress safely as a lead climber.

Whether you’re leading your first route, refining existing skills or returning for further coaching as your experience develops, we’ll create a course that helps you move towards your climbing goals.

We run our Lead Climbing courses throughout the year, with dates arranged around your availability, climbing objectives and the prevailing conditions.

Courses are priced at £300 per day for up to two people and can be booked for anything from a single day through to a longer programme spread over several visits.

Every course is bespoke. We’ll tailor the content, pace and venue to your experience, confidence and ambitions, ensuring you get the maximum benefit from your time on the rock.

Courses are regularly delivered in the Peak District, North Yorkshire, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, although other locations may be possible by arrangement.

If you’re unsure how best to structure your progression into lead climbing or how many days you may need, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to discuss the options with you.

    Who’s Behind Monkey Mountaineering?

Meet Sam Marshall: The Veteran Mountaineer Behind Monkey Mountaineering

Every great adventure company has a story and a purpose — and for Monkey Mountaineering, it all starts with Sam Marshall, a seasoned mountaineer, passionate explorer, and proud British Army veteran. If you’re curious about our mission, you can also read What is Monkey Mountaineering?.

After nearly three decades of service in the Army, including 22 years as an aircraft engineer and senior leader in high-pressure environments, Sam swapped helicopters and hangars for high peaks and remote trails. His mission? To share the life-changing power of the mountains with everyone, from first-time trekkers to seasoned climbers.

A Life of Service and Adventure

Sam’s love for the mountains was forged long before Monkey Mountaineering began. During his Army years, he thrived in extreme conditions, mastering leadership, teamwork, and meticulous planning in some of the world’s toughest environments.

These skills laid the foundations for leading safe, inspiring mountaineering expeditions today.

Leaving military life didn’t dampen his appetite for challenge — it fuelled a new purpose: helping others discover what’s possible when you push beyond your comfort zone. That vision is alive in every Monkey Mountaineering trip.

    The Monkey Mountaineering Difference

Monkey Mountaineering isn’t just another adventure company. Under Sam’s watchful eye, every expedition is planned with military-level care and the robust safety standards of British Standard 8848. But adventure, for Sam, goes beyond risk management — it’s about growth, connection, and perspective. He believes time in the mountains has the power to build resilience, spark confidence, and reconnect people with the wild and with each other.

More Than Mountains: A Legacy of Respect

Sustainability and community matter too. Sam ensures Monkey Mountaineering operates responsibly, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, employing local guides, and championing the Leave No Trace ethos. It’s adventure done right — for you and for the places you explore.
